The Alps form part of Albania, Austria, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, France, Germany, Italy, Liechtenstein, Monaco, Montenegro, Serbia, Slovenia and Switzerland. It is only Switzerland and Austria that can be considered true Alpine countries. Stretching some 1,200 kilometres (750 miles) across those countries and more than 300 kilometres (180 miles) wide at their broadest point between Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany, and Verona, Italy, the Alps cover more than 190,000 square kilometres (73,000 square miles).
The six main countries in the Alpine region are Austria, France, Germany, Italy, Slovenia and Switzerland. Two principalities also also in the region - Liechtenstein and Monaco.
