Julier Pass
One of the faster, smoother passes with a spectacular finale at the Silvaplana lake.
History
The pass road was constructed in the 1820s to replace the old Septimer pass. In 2009 some of the hairpins were removed to make for easier passage.
Notes
Most of the Julier pass is smooth and wide with only a few narrow spots where it passes through a village. At the summit is the Julier Theatre. A striking red building houses a theatre and art space - a unique multi-windowed wooden tower built to withstand avalanches and winds of up to 150 miles per hour it was intended to be dismantled in 2020, although in 2022 it still stands. The descent to Silvaplana is fairly short and the lakes appear in the final few moments before a tunnel delivers you lakeside.
